Tri-Parish Victim's Assistance
Rape Crisis Program: Volunteers

WHO WE ARE:

Rape Crisis is a division of the Tri-Parish Victim Assistance Program of the District Attorney's Office. Anyone who volunteers for the Rape Crisis Program would, therefore, be a representative of the District Attorney's Office

Our volunteer program provides hospital escorts, support, crisis counseling, and hotline services to survivors of sexual assault.

Our program will benefit anyone who wishes to act as an advocate to:

Our volunteer program consists of well-trained, dedicated people who wish to work to educate the public and end the often hostile response toward survivors of sexual assault, as well as provide support.

HOW CAN I HELP?

The District Attorney's Office is looking for volunteers for the Rape Crisis Program.

Our office provides a toll-free, confidential, 24-hour rape crisis hotline. This hotline is answered by the District Attorney's Office during the day, and transferred to a volunteer's home at night and on weekends.

The volunteers who staff the hotline are trained in nineteen hours of crisis counseling. These are usually split up into three training sessions.

Volunteers who answer the hotline have a large responsibility. The first person that a rape victim calls for help is very important. If the volunteer establishes mutual trust, and gives the caller a feeling of security and competence, one will feel comfortable calling again or getting the help one needs.

COULD THIS HAPPEN TO ME?

According to the National Victim Center, 1992:

In the United States, 1.3 women are raped every minute. That results in 78 rapes each hour, 1,872 rapes each day, 56,160 rapes each month and 683,280 rapes each year.

1 out of every 3 American women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime

61% of all rape cases involve victims less than 18 years old. 22% are between ages of 18 and 24.

78% of victims know the attacker.

Every woman is a potential victim. Rape in our society crosses all boundaries:
